What is the Common Core Writing Academy?

Common Core Writing Academy helps schools efficiently implement the Common Core State Standards via writing instruction. We help school leaders, coaches, and teachers plan, deliver, and assess writing instruction to meet the Common Core State Standards.  Click here to see our staff pictures and read our bios.

Why focus on writing now?

Common Core State Standards have been adopted by all but a few states.  These are very rigorous and require critical thinking, argument and research writing, and comprehension across a wide variety of text types.  Assessments developed to measure mastery of these Common Core State Standards are mostly based in writing.

Students who write well increase their learning across academic content areas (Bangert-Drowns, Hurley, & Wilkinson, 2004).  Learning to write more skillfully increases reading skills (Graham & Perin, 2007; Graham & Herbert, 2010).

The workplace today and in the future requires greater writing skills (Trilling & Fadel, 2009).
